About The Project

The inspiration for the project to build a primary school in Belize came after William’s funeral when a group of our friends and family members decided to build wells overseas as a tribute to his life in the building industry and his concern about improving the lives of people in the developing world.

Following discussions, this proposal was 'upgraded' to a suggestion to build a primary school in an area of Belize. David’s research has shown that although the Government of Belize provides 100% of the maintenance costs of schools in Belize, such as teacher salaries and books, they can only afford to provide 50% of the capital costs for building construction. This has led to a severe lack of school buildings in Belize, which UNESCO states as Belize’s biggest obstacle to meeting the 2015 Millennium Development Goals for education set out by the UN.

For the first school building project the Trust will provide funds to the Claretian Missionaries (www.claretians.org) which already operates in Belize in the provision of education.

Our ambition is to construct a small school on one of four possible locations

  • Santa Cruz,
  • San Pablo,
  • St Isidro or
  • Blaydon
in the Stann Creek district of Belize.

To date (15.08.2011) the trust has raised £ 53,942.87, so it already exceeds the estimated target of £ 20,000!

But that doesn't mean that we will slow down in our efforts, because every additional Pound will mean a better school. And who knows, with the fantastic help of all of you we might soon be able to build a second school.

But our first step will of course be to start building our first school. We hope that construction will start in September 2010.
